How to support your VCE student
You don't need to know the content to make a real difference. Here's a practical checklist of what actually helps, what to say, what to avoid, and the signs it's time to get extra support.
Your support checklist
What actually helps
Structure over supervision
A calm space and a routine do more than checking up. Help them build the plan, then let it run.
The basics matter most
Sleep, food and breaks affect marks more than any pep talk. A rested teen studies far better.
Effort over outcome
Praise the work, not just the result. Feeling safe to struggle keeps them trying.
You don't have to be the expert
You don't need to know Methods. Point them to teachers, resources or a study tool for the content.
- Nagging about marks — it raises anxiety and lowers cooperation
- Hovering or constant check-ins — it reads as “I don't trust you”
- Comparing them to siblings or friends — it only corrodes confidence
- Catastrophising about the ATAR — calm is more useful than pressure
What to say (and what to skip)
- “What's the hardest thing on your plate right now?”
- “How can I make this week a bit easier for you?”
- “You don't have to be perfect — just keep going.”
- “Whatever happens, I'm proud of how hard you're working.”
- “Have you done your homework?” (again)
- “When I was your age…”
- “Your sister got a [score]…”
- “If you don't study you'll ruin your future.”
Some stress is normal. Reach out for support if you notice, over a couple of weeks:
- Withdrawing from friends, family or things they used to enjoy
- Big changes in sleep, appetite or mood
- “What's the point” — hopelessness, or giving up entirely
- Anxiety that stops them functioning day to day
