HSC study guide

How to study for the HSC

The methods that actually work, a routine you can keep, and a module-by-module guide to the courses most NSW students take.

How to study for the HSC

The HSC course starts in Term 4 of Year 11, a full year before the exams. The students who do best treat that first term as the start of the race, not a warm-up: they learn each module properly as it's taught, test themselves on it within days, and come back to it before it fades.

That's the whole method. Test yourself instead of re-reading, space your revision out, and practise under exam conditions, then fix what the practice shows you got wrong. The guides below show how to run it week to week, how to handle your school's assessment tasks and trial exams, and what each module in your courses actually asks of you.

2027 is also a big change year. English and Mathematics move to new syllabuses first examined in 2027, so older guides and past papers for those courses won't always match what you're studying. The course guides here are written for the 2027 HSC.

Frequently asked questions

When does the HSC course start?

Schools start the HSC (Year 12) course in Term 4 of Year 11, after the Year 11 course finishes in Term 3. Your HSC exams are at the end of the following year, around October.

What's the best way to study for the HSC?

The methods with the strongest evidence are active recall (testing yourself instead of re-reading), spaced repetition (coming back to topics over weeks), and timed practice under exam conditions with honest feedback on what you got wrong.

Are the HSC syllabuses changing?

Yes. English and Mathematics have new syllabuses first examined in the 2027 HSC. Most other courses, including the sciences, stay on their current syllabuses for 2027, with new versions arriving in later years.

How many hours a day should I study for the HSC?

There's no single right number. Consistency matters more than long sessions: a regular weekly routine of focused, active study beats occasional marathons, and leaves room to rest before exams.
